Handling .msc files in windows 10

Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is a component introduced on Windows 2000 and later versions. This MMC will be used to host object component models called as snap ins. A snap in combined with MMC is called Management saved console which has the extension “.msc”. Any one can create or their own msc file using MMC and can release 3rd parties can also host their own snap ins using MMC’s Application Programming Interfacess (APIs) and can publish in Microsot Developer Network (MDN) web site. Let us see some of the common .msc files available in windows 10.

To view the .msc files go to command prompt (windows key + R and type as “cmd” and enter). Change the directory path to c:\windows\system32 and run the command “dir *.msc”.

Now let us see the common msc files available azman.msc ==> Authorization Manager, which have 2 types of modes 1. Developer mode which will allow users to create, deploy and maintain applications, with unrestricted access with all the features. 2. Administrator mode which will allow users to deploy and maintain the applications. This modes is not allowed to create any applications and define operations.

certlm.msc => Certificates Local Computer, Which will allows the users to view all the certificates in the local computers. Also will provide the options to request new certificate, import the certificates and find the certificates which already available to view.

certmgr.msc ==> Certificates current user, This tool will help to view the certificates which is for the current user who already logged in. Also it allows the current user to export the list of certificates and allows to add new certificates.

comexp.msc ==> component Services, This tool will help the users to view and all the components services like COM+ Applications, DCOM Configs, Running process by different applications and Distributed Transaction CO-Ordinator details such as transaction lists and transaction statistics.

compmgmt.msc ==> This tool allows the users to manage the computer with different tools sets. example: device mangers, storage management for managing disks, task scheduler, event viewer, performance etc

devmgmt.msc ==> Device Manager allows the users to manage the devices attached in the respective server/PC. Users can Install and uninstall any devices and can also update the drivers for the attached devices

DevModeRunAsUserConfig.msc ==> DevModeRunAsUserConfigurations for Start menu and Task bar. This is a very nice tool to the users who wants to customize their start menu and task bars. This tool allows to enable and disable the options to show and hide in the start menu and task bar.

diskmgmt.msc ==> Disk Management, This allows users to create/delete and modify the volumes, partitions, file systems also allows to format the file system. Users can assign the disk name identification letters.

eventvwr.msc ==> Will helps to see the events and logs for security, applications, systems and forwarded events. Also you can see the hardware events, Key Management services, administrative events etc.,

fsmgmt.msc ==> Filesystm management which will open the detailed about the share folders and files. It will allows you to set the number of user who can access the shares. It helps to identify the sessions connected and opened files from the shares. The user can create a new share and can assign and can set the connection limits as well.

gpedit.msc =>Group Policy Edit. Helps to edit the configurations for users and computer, Allows to do software and windows settings, also users can use administrative templates to enable disable the configuration settings.

lusrmgr.msc ==> Local user and groups manager. This will help us to create, edit and delete the local users, and groups. Also from this tools we can export the list of groups and users available and can import to other system.

perfmon.msc =>Performance Monitoring. It is very much helpful to the administrators to see the running Memory usage, availability and cache faults. Easily could understood the bytes transferred by the network interfaces, Idle time percentage and average disk queue length on each drive, Process information like interrupt and processor time in percentage. Users can also define and get the reports as per their requirements.

printmanagement.msc ==> Print management, will allow the users to see the number of printers, divers and the printers which is running with print jobs etc.,

rsop.msc ==> Resultant Set of Policy. This will allows the users to generate the result from the group policies set already.

secpol.msc ==> Local Security Policies, Helps to set the Account policies, local policies, network list manager policies, public key and software restriction policies, Audit and windows defender firewall setting etc

services.msc ==> Serivces, This will allows the users to see the list of services running and its status. Users can enable and disable the services. Also allows the users to stop and start a particular services either manual or automatic.

taskschd.msc ==> Task scheduler. Will helps to create tasks lists and to schedule the tasks based on the requirements. This will also helps to import the list of tasks which already exported from some other systems. Users can view the running tasks as well.

tpm.msc ==> it will open the trusted platform module management on the local computer which requires that option to be turned on the BIOS level.

WF.msc ==> Windows Firewall. This will helps to the users to set the inbound and outbound rules with connection security rules. Also can monitor the active connections etc.,

WmiMgmt.msc ==> Windows Management Instrumentation Services, which allows the users to connect other computers and can manage
